94年録音のソロ・ピアノ・アルバム『ブレイクアウト』からの< 1 >「ブラック・フォレスト」は当然ソロ・ピアノ。そして2000年にTV-CFのために録音したボズ・スキャッグスのナンバー< 11 >「ウィー・アー・オール・アローン」もソロ・ピアノ――という具合に、ソロ・ピアノからスタートしてソロ・ピアノで終わる、小曽根真自身の選曲によるヴァーヴ時代のベスト盤だ。

94年から2000年にかけての11曲が収録されているわけだが、この時代は、北川潔＆クラレンス・ペンと組んだ“ザ・トリオ”の活動が中心だったので、両者とのトリオ演奏が多く含まれている。さらに変化を持たせるためか、ジョン・スコフィールドやウォレス・ルーニーの参加曲も加えられている。「デビューした際にいろんなピアニストや音楽家の影響が出ていることがとてもイヤで、でもどうしようもなくて、『自分の大好きな音楽を探す』という漠然とした目標をずっと追いかけて作ってきた何枚ものアルバムの中から、今、西暦2000年の小曽根真が、『これ、やっぱり俺だな』って感じることのできる僕の子どもたちを集めてみた」、とは本人の弁。（市川正二）
